School Cooperatives

In the Bahamas there are a few schools that are involved in cooperatives credit unions.  These cooperatives are organizations that allow all students to engage in saving and financial accountability. At C. C. Sweeting Senior High we have  a cooperative that is comprised of 70 plus members.  Our Cooperative Society is operated similar to the Cooperative Credit Unions in The Bahamas.  We elected board members and hosted board meetings to plan the affairs of our cooperative. Public Workers Cooperative Credit Union is C.C. Sweeting sponsoring company.  This year our cooperative was able to be reestablished, thus we were able to raises fund for our club T-Shirt, hosted a general assembly, held various financial literacy meetings, participated in a National Youth Leadership Conclave Training Session and attended and participated in the 8th Annual Youth Cooperative Training Session in St, Lucia. As teachers and students it is important to become financial literate.  We as business teachers have to teach our students to be wise and accountable to their financial affairs.

What is a Credit Union?
A credit union is a financial co-operative organised by a group of people to save money and make loans to each other at favourable rates. Members usually have something in common such as their place of work, area of residence, professional organisation or social group.
Credit Unions:

1. Encourage and help members save regularly to achieve their financial goals

2. Provide loans to their members at competitive rates

3. Provide financial counselling to their members often at no cost
4. Provide the opportunity for persons to own and democratically control their own financial institution

A co-operative is an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to met their common economic, social and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly-owned and democratically controlled enterprise.
